9 month old pup has gone from not eating to vomiting when he does

by Linda
(Ontario, Canada)

I recently posed a question about my puppy not eating for 3-4 days in a row; talked with the vet. Blood work and stool spec OK. Now he is either throwing up bile or vomits on the day he eats. Back to the Vet; barium Xray, no findings. Breeder suggested it might be a liver shunt?? Don't know what to do, puppy is losing weight and has gone from 22 pounds to 17.5 lbs. in just over 4 weeks. Is on Antibiotics and Prednisone, if this fails what next??

Puppy no longer vomiting. New dog food
by: Linda from Canada

Hi, We made the decision to make our puppy his own food and since then, he has stopped vomiting, has regained his weight and is full of fun and energy. I can't beleive what a change. He actually looks for his meals and his now eating 2 x a day. We had him on a very good puppy food (according to the Vet), but it didn't seem to agree with him.
We'll continue to keep a close eye on him of course, but so far, so good.

Common in this breed...
by: Anonymous

Addison's Disease: Also known as hypoadrenocorticism, this extremely serious condition is caused by an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Most dogs with Addison's disease vomit, have a poor appetite, and have little energy. Because these signs are vague and can be mistaken for other conditions, it's easy to misdiagnose this disease until it reaches more advanced stages. More severe signs occur when a dog is stressed or when potassium levels become high enough to interfere with heart function, causing severe shock and death. If your vet suspects Addison's, she may perform a series of tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Organic or homemade food might be the answer
by: Anonymous

I am so sorry to hear your little guy is not well. Did you ever try to feed him only organic food ? I do't know the circumstances, may be he has a very sensitive digestive system, just like some babies. Inform yourself about the toxic garbage that goes into so called dog food, including premium brands. He might be reacting to some of those. Check it out on the internet, weed through the articles. Prepare to be astounded at what actually goes into so called DOG FOOD It is sickening) and you will never want to feed your dog anything other than certified organic or what you prepare for him yourself. Remember the dog food companies are in it for the money only of course and they make it hand over foot. We, love our dogs like children, want them to be well and live a long life and unfortunately we fall for the advertisement with all the lies. Check out Amazon.com under Organic Dog Food, or your local Healthfood Store. I wish you and your Puppy only the very best, how hope he's well soon.

Seek a 2nd opinion
by: Betsy, Alpharetta, GA

I am so sorry that your puppy is going through this. I don't have any suggestions other than; at this point, I would take the results of all tests and see another vet for a second opinion.
And, this I would do immediately.

Sometimes, one vet or doctor has had experiences that enable them to see something that the first person did not.
