a dog's way

why does my schnauzer breathe heavy,scratch carpet and pant? He's never done that before.he also sits like a statue and watches the family. He has manners - even understands things like a house dog. I've had him eleven years an never seen him do this. What should I do?

My Mini is 6 years old and I have had her since she was 4 months old. Lately she has been sitting and staring at me also. I don't recall her doing that before and it is weird. I hope someone can explain. She seems to be all right in other ways, but the staring is freaking me out.

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX: She is doing this to demand your attention! Don't respond when she stares at you or she will become more demanding.

Sounds like his behaviour has changed. Is he staring into space a lot - or going off and hiding in corners? These can be signs of a mini stroke.
If he seems happy enough, ignore it, it could just be old age.
If you think he might be in any way confused, distressed or uncomfortable, then get him checked out.
