I know it sounds funny, But when mine were little when they would bark i said in my boss voice BE QUIET. This is the same voice that i used to take them outside to the bathroom and told them to HURRY UP. When they obey the commands as puppys you must not forget to give them praise to let them know they are doing the Desired thing. An older dog is a little harder to train this way but it can be done. Our Schnauzers are very smart little beings also. If you tell them "If youre going to bark go outside", and open the door for them or point to the dog door a few times they will get the idea. and soon they know with just a look or gesture. I does take paitence.. But the next time you sweetie doesnt do what you want em to the first time.. or tenth time just remember.. it took us a little while to master the potty and talking too=)

Its sounds counter productive but you train them to bark. Training them to bark on command and then to bark quietly then to not bark at the wrong time. You use the same technique as other training. tell him to bark (then you bark to show him) when he barks you treat. Once he gets this down you do the quiet game. You tell him to bark softly. and when you say it you say it softly. Just say quiet or shh. Then after that you can try the no bark command. I always found when they learn quiet of shhh or soft then they are usually quiet enough.
Good Luck. My last dog did well with this but my mini is a little more stubborn. My last dog was a springer spaniel and he barked softly.

Clicker training works great. When taking your dog for a walk as a person comes up and you notice them first click and give treat so she knows she not barking is rewarded after they walk bye and dog has stopped barking reward. In your home start with people she knows that come and visit, Click then Give them a treat for not barking. Do this every time until she gets it then work when strangers come by if they bark ignore them, do not even reward with a stop or shut up just ignore so you arent rewarding them with attention. If you need to start by having clicker when someone that lives in your home walks in the room without barking the give a treat.
