best diet for pancreatitis?

My 15 year old schnauzer has had two bouts with pancreatitis this year.
He has lost weight and wants to eat all the time. What is the best diet for him?
Would adding enzymes to his food help him digest more properly or mess up his pancreas?

Pancreatitis
by: Betty

My schnauzer has had this same problem. The vet gave me two recipes that has worked for her. White rice and yogurt, fed twice daily. The other is white rice and chicken broth, fed twice daily. (REMOVE THE FAT from the top of your boiled chicken and you can do this by placing in the refrig and skimming fat off and then mixing into the rice.) He also gave me a tube of vitamin supplements/minerals to feed her along with the rice mixtures as the recipes do not the vitamin/minerals that your dog needs daily. Gradually add her regular food back into her diet. This is a five to ten day process. This is a very serious disease and your dog should be taken to a vet immediately and monitored. My vet told me once they have this disease it only takes a little fat to reactivate it again. My dog also has allergies, we feed her Science Diet, gourmet chicken. We do not ever feed her table scraps anymore.

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX- Very valuable advice, thank you for sharing that, Betty.

RE: best diet for pancreatitis?

I do not know about the enzymes but one of my miniature schnauzer began having stomach problems and issues with her pancreas when she was about 12 or 13. She lived to be a healthy 23 eating canned Science Diet Lamb and Rice formula for Senior Dogs. Her weight never fluctuated after starting that regiment and was always exactly 18 lbs. She ate 1/3-1/2 of a can once in the morning around 7AM and again at 7PM. I believe there is a dry formula but some dogs won't eat it because it is so bland-plus the canned food can be easier for them to digest. Schnauzers have unusually sensitive stomachs compared to other breeds (which you probably already know) and a sneaky;) baby who manages to get into the garbage is a sure fire way to cause pancreatitis flare ups. ANY table scraps could do the same and do some serious damage. Also, dog treats like Pupperoni, Bacon Strips, etc. that are so high in fat, etc. can also cause problems. For treats we gave her little balls of her canned food. Anyway...my best to you both!

Science Diet WD
by: Anonymous

Our schnauzer also has had two bouts of pancreatitis this year. Our vet has him on a Science Diet WD. We mix the can food with the dry kibble (both WD.) The only treats he now gets is called "Yummy Chummies," they are all natural salmon treats from Alaska. As long as we keep to this he is fine. Anything else and he isn't himself. Hope this helps.
