Chase

My 6 year old standard schnoodle doesn't come when I call him while we are out walking. If he sees a cat, chicken, or almost any small animal he will purse it and ignore my come command. At home or in close quarters he is obedient. There have been days when I have been late for work because he has ran off. I can't run him on the leash so I need to be able to let him run on his own and return to me when called. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi there,
You are right, you need to let your Schnoodle run off the leash.
He sounds like he may have a strong prey drive (like Max), ie he has a natural; instinct to chase small animals birds, etc.
You may never be able to stop him doing this entirely -although training will certainly help with the recall.
Start training him when you are out on walks, always take treats with you and call him back a lot and reward him with praise or treats.
When he thinks you always have treats, he will improve. This is a hugely simplified version of teaching the recall, there are many good books out there on recall, including one written by Pippa Mattinson - Total Recall .
There's also free advice on the internet.
