Scruffy
by: David Barden

My wife and I brought Scruffy home in May 2005, his birthday is March 22, 2005 and he just turned 16 years old. We were told he was a mix of Schnauzer and Chihuahua but mostly resembles a Schnauzer. Recently he has lost a lot of weight and sometimes seems disoriented. I thought he may have had a stroke or something as I came into the hallway and it looked as if he was running into the wall headfirst and shaking and then fell down. Took him to the emergency room twice now for a severe coughing fit and has been diagnosed with a collapsed trachea but his heart and oxygen levels are good and blood work was ok. But he is getting really skinny and clingy with me, he is almost totally deaf and doesn't see well either. He tries to eat and a lot of the food falls out of his mouth and he is having muscle seizures in his neck. I just don't want him to suffer if he is in pain or quality of life is not good. Both times I took him to the emergency vet I thought they would have to put him down, but he is still here with us like our child. Thanks for reading.

Gus...loyal & loving companion
by: Richard

At almost 15 years old (Jan. 2021) Gus has really started to have problems. He is a small standard. We recued him from a bad environment at 6 months of age. He was under weight as a puppy. His Vet is telling us it's mostly old age problems. We know his time with us is becoming short. We have lost friends and family through the years and we miss them. I guess because some dogs are like children it really hurts to lose them. We've had dogs in the past and have always tried to give them a good home and good care. All have past from old age. Gus is so special...smart, loving and always there with my wife and me. For now we will be his companion and love him till the end.

NOTE FROM LINDA: Well done to you for giving Gus such a long and happy life,. Our thoughts are with you.

Vestibular
by: Linda

I am sorry, we have not come across that in Schnauzers, although they are prone to ear infections, which can be a cause of it. We wish your beloved Schnauzer Reno a peaceful end of life and when the time comes, let him go peacefully at the right time. Our thoughts are with you.
15 is a great age spfor a Schnauzer, you must have taken the best care of him.

Reno is 15 1/2!
by: Anonymous

Our loyal, and devoted Schnauzer is the best family friend. So smart and true to every character trait. He’s suffered two bouts with vestibular disease within the last four months so we fear he’s nearing the end of his time with us, sadly. Anyone else have this issue? How long did that last before your pet passed away? Thank you.

My Sweet Girls
by: Anonymous

I have two Miniature Schnauzers. Jaz is 11 years old today. She has Valley Fever in her bones. She takes Fluconazole which caused liver problems. I give her Denamarin for that. She has good and bad days.

My other Schnauzer, Jacqui is turning 15 on June 1st. She has Vertigo which has caused her hearing to go bad... she doesn't know where my voice is coming from--even if I'm very close. And it has caused her to have doggie dementia. However... both are still wonderful girls and very loving.

What's your prognosis for each?

My Buddy
by: Anonymous

My white schnauzer is turning 17 in April. For a year we have given him a pill for joint health every morning which has helped his movements. Most of his time is spent laying on his bed and sleeping now, but gets up in the morning and still runs and gets excited.

age of schnauzers
by: Vickie

We have two mini schnauzer's one is 15 and the other one is 13. Our 15 year old sleeps a lot and looks disoriented at times and I believe she is deaf and partially blind. Our 13 year old has started slowing down a lot and I believe she had a heat stroke and since then has really moved very slow.

Miniature Schnauzer age
by: Linda and Max

Bella is right, miniature schnauzers may live until their teens.

According to the Kennel club, the average lifespan for a Miniature Schnauzer is 10 to 15 years of age.

Generally the larger the dog, the shorter the lofespan, so Standard and giant Schnauzers would typically live slightly less long.

Although there are always exceptions to the rule.
