Is it normal for an 11 yr old Schnauzer to have become scared of a loud noise or sudden noise?

Many minis are scared of loud noises - and it gets worse as they get older. Things they were perfectly happy with a year or two before suddenly petrifies them. Max is the same, he is nearly 12. We give him melatonin before Bonfire and firework night (tomorrow) over here.
