Is it okay for a Schnauzer to have a long tail? My Schnauzer has a long tail and the groomer calls her "the Schnauzer with the long tail". Do people look down on them if they have long tails? Thank you.

We agree Konnie, Schnauzers look great with tails.
It's illegal to dock them in the UK and Europe.

We just had our first litter of Miniature Schnauzers. We have three puppies, two black-and-white females and one black male. Our veterinarian will not dock tails, and we don’t want to. Our puppies will go to their forever homes with long tails, and if their new families choose to shorten their tail, they can do it at about the six month mark under anesthesia. We feel that if God did not want them to have a long tail, they wouldn’t have been born with one. It helps them with their balance, and it just makes them happier that they have a tail to wag!

Good luck in your search. We agree with you, Schnauzers look much better as Nature intended!
I've taken a quick look on the AKC Puppy Finder for Minis in CA, but nobody has any puppies at the moment. Might be worth contacting them to see if they have any upcoming litters

I live in Santa Cruz CA. We are looking for a breeder of miniature schnauzers who do not dock tails and ears of puppies. So far, no luck and hope someone can help us. Thanks.

Rebel is now 6 and Benji is only 2.. since commenting I now have two Schnauzers as well as Rambo who is not a schnauzer.. Benji, too has a long curly tail and they look great and always wag.. Benji wags his tail round in circles and also from side to side… I believe if tails were supposed to be docked then puppies would be born with docked tails.. some are..and that's natural..

My schnauzer is a rescue that I got since he was a puppy. He has his full tail and I would never dream of docking it. People kept telling me to do it. But frankly, I think that the practice of cutting a tail or cropping the ears is just cruel. Same thing with my PitBull. I agree it give them personality!

Your schnauzer's tail is wonderful! He's adorable and likely would be traumatized to have it docked now. Best to leave his tail natural. It looks really good! Should be illegal to crop ears and dock tails in my opinion. The dog can feel the pain and it's so pointless b/c it's only the human who wants it not the dog.

My pedigree mini-schnauzer.. REBEL.. has a lovely long curly tail ( rather like the husky's ).. and he loves wagging it.. everyone comments on it when we go walkies.. as he looks so cute.. he's not 3 yet..

We adopte 2 dogs from a schnauzer rescue in 2010 after our 16 year old schnauzer passed away. One is actually a half schnauzer half wire fox, she has a long curly tail. The other maybe a schnauzer mix we're not sure but he looks a lot like our old schnauzer but he has a long tail also. I see no problem with the long tail, you just have to make sure the hair doesn't get matted. I kind of like the tails, they look cute.

my osn and family just adopted a standard schnauzer that has a long tail and she is now 6 mo old and too old to dock, but we think it gives her character and we are hving the groomer to groom her tail just like the rest of her body so that everything will be clean and flowing naturally.'i was a vet. tech for nearly 8 yrs and the tail docking and ear croppin of these dogs are way too painful and should be outlawed. everyone wants to talk about humane treatment of these animals so for anyone who wants to dock a tail or crop ears i would tell you to go to a vets office and see if you cna sit in on the surgery and watch how painful it is when the animal wakes up, so no look should superceed comfort in my opinion. our annie is perfectly happy and healthy and has alot of schnauzer character wiht her tail and ears.

Please leave the tail alone!!!!! Here in the UK we DO NOT dock their tails- they are a natural part of the dog.

I have a schnauzer with long tail his name shadow, and his tail looks very healthy and everybody that has a schnauzer like me they say that they would of liked to leave the tail long, I leave the bottom of the tail long so it would looks nice, it's okey to leave him with a long tail and he will not be suffering.

I think it's very cruel to dock the tail. It's something we have been accustomed to in the US. I'd like to see the AKC stop promoting it.

Here in England it is illegal to have tails dogged.
Hope this helps, they look so much more natural with their tail, which they were born with.
