when to operate on old schnauzer?

by Dad

We have a 13 year old female. She is very active and we think in very good health. She has had a couple of Schnauzer bumps in the past.
But about six weeks ago we noticed a little bump on the inside of her back leg that seems to be a cyst. We think it may be getting bigger but it doesn't seem to be getting any harder.

How much longer should wait before we think about surgery. Our Vet thinks we should have surgery immediately. But we don't want to put her through that if it is not necessary at this time.
Thanks for any advice.

I'd have it seen to
by: Betsy, Alpharetta

You could always consider getting a second opinion, but if you have been going to your current vet for sometime and trust his/her judgement, I would certainly not wait.

Vets have the experience to know when a lump is something that requires acting on soon. And, they also have experience with surgery on older dogs. Vets usually will tell an owner if going through an operation would be too much for a dog.

I hope the lump turns out to be nothing serious, but do think I would see to it immediately just in case.

Operation on your girl
by: Michele

I suggest you do get the cysts removed by
your vet as he says and if you say she is active
and healthy. It will give you peace of mind
knowing BUT do remember to get your vet
yo weigh her before the anaesthetic so as not
to overdose her. The op is minor as my black
boy also had the same and he lived till the age
of 15 as he said Goodbye in Nov 2010..( see my story in Raunbow Bridge ) He had it done at 12. She will be
fine. Keep us informed.
